Comfort in the Promises
by Mrs. Nancy O.
I think there is nothing more touching in all the world, than looking upon a tender and loving mother comforting her child. Young ladies, perhaps one day if the Lord so wills, you will marry and be blessed with children of your own. The love of a mother for her child, is so very strong and encompassing! I remember in the delivery room, when they first handed me my newborn son. What joy and love filled my breast! The nurse placed the tiny bundle in my arms, our eyes met for the first time, and my heart felt as if it would burst with a new found wonder and affection. I gazed up at my dear husband by my side, and noted the tears streaming down his cheeks. I do not believe there is a word in the English language, which can adequately express what a woman feels at that moment. And yet, this is only the beginning of a very special and loving relationship. As that little one grows, so does the love of his mother. Their hearts become so closely intertwined, that at times they seem to beat as one. When he becomes frightened, hurt, or troubled, none are so skillful at understanding and comforting him, as his own, beloved mother. His very pain becomes her own. Dandled upon her knees and nestled snug against her breast, he feels safe and secure.
In Isaiah 66:13 we read, “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”
Are these not precious words? If we, who are so imperfect and sinful, have such an intense love for our children; how much more does our Heavenly Father love His own dear, blood-bought babes. He loves them unconditionally, with an everlasting love. Not only does He love them as their Father, He also loves them with the tenderness of a kind and affectionate mother. I find this so comforting! Often when trials are pressing heavily upon me, and it seems that no one truly understands, I remember that I may run to my Heavenly Father. As it is written in Psalm 62:5-8, “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.” And in I Peter 5:7, “Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you.”
Young ladies, if you have embraced Christ by faith through the sovereign working of God’s regenerating Spirit, you are then His child. These promises and many more to be found in Holy Scripture, are for you. They are like precious pearls. Read them... meditate upon them... claim them as your own. Know that your Heavenly Father understands you, far better than you understand yourself. He loves you with the tenderest affection, even more than your own earthly mother. His heart is touched with the feelings of your infirmities. When you are cast down, He lifts you up and embraces you, and carries you pressed against His bosom.
